A decentralised approach to determine the location of devices in a trustworthy manner
POSER is a decentralised approach to determine the location of devices in a trustworthy manner. POSER makes use of the Helium network in which community device owners are incentivized through a crypto-economy powered by blockchain technology, ensuring a level of transparency and security not currently available within the Internet of Things (IoT).
The problem
Urban population keeps growing, challenging cities to find the right balance between urban development needs and global environmental changes. Sustainability plays a crucial role in everyone’s lives, affecting everyone directly, and most of the time, only a few people care about it and understand that even a small gesture can have a tremendous effect on everyone. For that to happen, we need societal changes, environmental changes and behavioural changes.
GoGreen is a solution developed by Ubiwhere that encourages people to opt for more sustainable transportation options through incentives and challenges, but its rewards require the end-users to share their locations. Since such data can be spoofed, we have developed an innovative solution that improves trustworthiness and validates the end-user’s presence at certain geographic locations at a given time, in a decentralised manner.
How does it work?
Our solution – POSER – consists of a Dynamic Proof of location, a secure and spatially distributed location system that uses radio signals (from telecommunication equipment available in the urban environment) to determine one’s location, similar to GPS, with the locations being claimed to an Ethereum blockchain.
Our solution consists of a cloud solution composed of open-source intelligent services that comply with reference architectures and open standards from EU and international initiatives such as FIWARE, OASC and ETSI.

Expected impact
According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), “mobility is a fundamental human need, and an essential enabler of prosperity, but the current mobility paradigm is not sustainable”. Our objective is to improve sustainability by showing people it is easy and profitable for them.
Car travel is said to cause millions of deaths every year, with a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions being transport-related and congestion causing heavy financial losses.
Therefore, policy-makers seek out ways to foster mobility that is smarter, cleaner and more inclusive, with Cities worldwide having agreed on ambitious goals towards 2030 and regarding greenhouse gases emissions and carbon neutrality.
Our solution, which aims to improve firstly the GoGreen application’s proof of location, is expected to be easily accepted in the market mainly due to its adaptability to different applications that require proof of location. Therefore, the solution is expected to have a wide impact globally.
POSER contributes to:
Economy
Saving Money in Transportation
Safety
Reducing number of Accidents
Environment
Lowering Emissions
